WordCamp Kent

I had a great time at WordCamp Kent in June, where I was inspired to do new things with this site and other websites that I run. This WordCamp was quite affordable (just $40) and included plenty of speakers presenting on great WordPress topics, great conversations between sessions and in the hallways with presenters, vendors, and other attendees, and plenty of great food. As an alum of Kent State University, it was also wonderful to be back in Kent, see how some parts of the downtown and the campus has changed and grown since I graduated, and visit some of my old stomping grounds again.

My favorite session was probably Design is Dead – Long Live Design! in which Tracy Apps pointed out the common lazy design that most websites employ these days, revisiting some of the creative design processes early web designers employed, and challenging us to develop more creative accessible web designs. For a non-designer like me, it might be difficult for me to develop a new creative design for this site, but hopefully I can take some time to work on implementing some creative changes in the coming months.

I would recommend attending a WordCamp near you. This was my second WordCamp experience, and both of them have been quite helpful, even for someone using WordPress casually like I do.
