Adapting to Change in 2020

It feels like it’s been ten years since I’ve updated the blog, but it has in fact been just over one.

As everywhere in higher education, this new year has had its ups and downs, but I’ve been most impressed with the adaptability of our students, faculty, and employer partners to our temporary new reality.

My biggest efforts this year have been:

  • Implementing, troubleshooting, and assisting with the system we’ve implemented to conduct our virtual job fairs
  • Transitioning my class to be presentable in a hybrid format, with some students in the classroom and others attending virtually
  • Assisting students seeking internships and graduates seeking jobs in a particularly challenging search scenario
  • Trying to stay positive

Outside of work, I have been doing a few things:

  • Working on upgrading my home server’s hardware (it’s been ~9 years since I built it, and the hardware was budget/borderline anemic for the time)
  • I’ve transitioned from using Ubuntu/Lubuntu to Fedora as my primary desktop Linux for a variety of reasons. I’ve been very pleased with the software available and overall system stability. I am considering further moving to Fedora’s very interesting Silverblue project, but have not yet done so. Maybe when Fedora 33 comes out.
  • Tinkering with Sandstorm, which is an amazing private cloud platform.
  • Studying up on options trading

Unfortunately some of my other usual involvement – participating in the Bradley Community Chorus, particularly – won’t be possible right now due to the current state of things.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before things restabilize, but I am personally expecting this spring to also be along these same lines. Best to you and yours out there.
